Parents of language learners:
Common struggles and tips to support your student
-
We will provide your student with a number of self-study resources, including apps, websites, and flashcards.
If your student needs extra help on a specific topic, reach out! We’ll research and create resources tailored to their needs.
-
Some students benefit from having a study partner. You can help your child by going through flashcards together.
We recommend making physical flashcards to assist with memorization - have your student handwrite the cards, then go through them together.
Online flashcards, such as Quizlet, can also be helpful. Students can self-study through games with Quizlet Plus (about $35 per year).

Japanese presents a special kind of challenge to language learners: it uses three writing systems which can be very difficult to memorize.
Students will learn the writing systems in this order: hiragana > katakana > kanji. It is very important that students have a strong understanding of hiragana and katakana before kanji.
Please visit the “Japanese students” page and click the “writing resources” button for resources.
🌟Students are encouraged to practice writing at least 15 minutes per day until all hiragana and katakana are memorized.
